Double Eyelid Surgery in Korea 2026: Suture vs Incision Cost

Double eyelid surgery in Korea costs ₩1.2-1.8M (US$805-1,208) with sutures for thin lids and a 7-day stay, or ₩1.8-2.8M (US$1,208-1,879) with an incision for hooded lids and 10 days (Oct 2026). With no VAT refund in 2026, a continuous suture stays the best value for thin lids despite a 13.4% four-year redo rate.

For double eyelid surgery in Korea, your eyelid picks the method and the method sets the length of your trip. Non-incisional (buried suture) surgery suits thin lids and a 7-day trip, while incisional surgery suits hooded or fatty lids and a 10-day stay. One Gangnam clinic's October 2026 price list puts them at ₩1,200,000-1,800,000 (US$805-1,208) and ₩1,800,000-2,800,000 (US$1,208-1,879). Sutures cost less and heal faster, but 13.4%-26.2% of suture creases needed a second operation within four years in the largest 2025 study.

Suture or Incision: Which Double Eyelid Surgery in Korea Fits Your Trip?

Choose a non-incisional suture for thin lids on a 7-day trip and an incision for hooded or fatty lids on a 10-day trip. Buried sutures hold a fold in place with threads under the skin and remove nothing, so they work best on thin lids with little fat. An incision lets the surgeon take skin or fat out of a hooded or full lid, and the crease no longer depends on a thread. Partial incisional surgery sits in between. It removes some fat through a few short openings along the crease and leaves no full-length scar.

The Gangnam clinic's guide recommends about 5-7 days in Seoul after non-incisional surgery and 7-10 days after incisional surgery. A suture crease fits easily into a week. An incision fits a week only if surgery happens on day 1 or 2.

Book the consultation for day 1. If the surgeon finds ptosis (a weak eyelid-lifting muscle), the method, the price and the stay can all change. You will not be the only visitor in the waiting room: Ministry of Health and Welfare data show 233,100 foreign patients were treated in Korean plastic surgery departments in 2025, 11.2% of all foreign patients treated that year.

How Often Does a Non-Incisional Double Eyelid Crease Loosen?

Within four years, 13.4% to 26.2% of buried suture patients needed a second operation, and the technique made the difference (P<0.001). Okumura and colleagues followed 1,500 cases, 500 per technique, at a Japanese clinic chain with more than 100 branches from October 2020 to November 2024. They published the results in Archives of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (2025):

  • Continuous, where one thread runs along the crease: 13.4% needed a second operation, and 85% of creases still held at day 500.
  • Transconjunctival, where the threads go in from the inner side of the lid: 19.4%, with 78% still holding.
  • Two-point, where separate knots hold the crease: 26.2%, with 72% still holding.

A two-point suture led to a second operation 1.96 times as often as a continuous one, roughly one patient in four against one in eight. Loosened sutures caused 73.4% of the 283 second operations. Infections were rare, at 7 across all 1,500 cases.

Two more 2025 studies of two-point patients in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery show what shifts those odds. Fat removal helped. From 2,934 procedures, researchers matched 188 patients who had fat removed with 188 who did not. Over 4.5 years, 17.0% of the fat-removal group needed another operation for a lost crease, against 33.5% of the others. Age mattered too: in a separate cohort, 22.3% of patients (134) had a second operation, from 41% under age 20 down to 12% at ages 30-39.

All three studies are retrospective reviews of past cases by one Japanese research group with overlapping data, and none measured patient satisfaction. The main cohort averaged 26.1 years of age (90.4% women, 86.7% under 35), so its rates fit younger patients best. The studies cover sutures only, because an incisional crease has no thread to loosen. A clinic that claims far less loosening should show you its own follow-up data.

How Much Does Double Eyelid Surgery Cost in Korea in 2026?

Double eyelid surgery in Korea costs ₩1,200,000-1,800,000 (US$805-1,208) with sutures and ₩1,800,000-2,800,000 (US$1,208-1,879) with a full incision on one Gangnam clinic's October 2026 price list. A revision costs more than either. The clinic sets the final price after an in-person consultation.

Dollar figures use ₩1,490 per US$1, the rate in Ministry of Health and Welfare figures from April 2026 that put ₩12.5 trillion at about US$8.4 billion. Treat each published price as the surgery fee. Ask the clinic to list anesthesia, medication, stitch removal, follow-up visits and VAT as separate lines.

The VAT refund for foreign patients ended on 31 December 2025, so the 10% VAT on cosmetic surgery now stays on your bill. The Ministry of Economy and Finance announced on 31 July 2025 that the refund on foreigners' cosmetic and dermatology procedures, in place since April 2016, would end that year. A ₩1,500,000 quote "before VAT" now costs ₩1,650,000 (US$1,107), and nothing comes back at the airport. Blog prices from before 2026 no longer compare.

Foreign patients spent ₩3.3 trillion on medical care in Korea in 2025, about ₩1.64 million (US$1,100) per patient across all departments. A first suture procedure costs roughly that average, and a revision at the top of its range costs more than twice as much. Korea Care Guide takes no referral fees or booking commissions from clinics. This guide uses the Gangnam list because it prices all three procedures, not because we endorse the clinic.

How Many Days Should You Stay in Seoul After Double Eyelid Surgery?

Plan a 7-day trip for non-incisional surgery and a 10-day trip for incisional surgery, each with a spare day before the flight. A suture patient has the consultation and surgery on day 1, check-ups on days 2-3 and a final check on day 5, then flies home between day 5 and day 7. An incisional patient has surgery on day 1 or 2 and the same early check-ups. The stitches come out around day 5-7, and a spare day follows before the flight.

Get your stitch removal date in writing before you book the return flight. Published clinic guides set it anywhere from day 4 to day 7. Visible swelling takes 1-2 weeks to go down, so leave another week before any important photos. Loosening shows up far later: by day 500, only 72%-85% of suture creases still held.

The extra nights widen the cost gap. Every trip total in this guide uses the same basis: the midpoint of the published surgery price, a hotel at ₩150,000 per night and ₩1,490 per US$1, with flights excluded. A 7-day trip means 6 nights, and a 10-day trip means 9.

  • Non-incisional: ₩1,500,000 + 6 nights (₩900,000) = ₩2,400,000 (US$1,611)
  • Incisional: ₩2,300,000 + 9 nights (₩1,350,000) = ₩3,650,000 (US$2,450)

The incisional trip costs ₩1,250,000 (US$839) more, 1.52 times the suture trip. With 10% VAT on the surgery fee, the totals rise to ₩2,550,000 (US$1,711) and ₩3,880,000 (US$2,604).

Which Double Eyelid Method Fits Your Eyelids, Budget and Stay?

A continuous buried suture fits thin lids on a short trip, and full incisional surgery fits hooded or fatty lids when you can stay 10 days. Fat, age and where you live decide the cases in between.

For long-haul visitors, the hidden cost is a second trip. A record 173,363 Americans were treated in Korea in 2025, ministry data show. Assuming a revision at the midpoint of its range and 9 nights in Seoul, that second trip costs ₩4,350,000 (US$2,919) before flights. Multiply it by each technique's four-year reoperation rate to price the risk into the first trip:

  • Continuous suture: the risk adds ₩582,900 (US$391), for ₩2,982,900 (US$2,002) in total. That is still ₩667,100 (US$448) below incisional surgery.
  • Two-point suture: the risk adds ₩1,139,700 (US$765), for ₩3,539,700 (US$2,376) in total.
  • If the revision happens: suture surgery plus revision reaches ₩6,750,000 (US$4,530), 1.85 times the incisional trip.

Once that risk is priced in, a two-point suture saves only ₩110,300 (US$74) over incisional surgery. For lids that could suit either method, choose a continuous suture or go straight to an incision.

How Do You Vet a Double Eyelid Surgery Clinic in Seoul?

Vet a Seoul clinic by getting five things in writing: the operating surgeon, an itemized quote, the suture technique, the aftercare policy and the clinic's own results. Pick the clinic first and the neighbourhood second. You will return for two or three check-ups, so a short ride from your hotel matters more than the district. Seoul treated 1.76 million of Korea's 2.01 million foreign patients in 2025 (87.2%), and 87.7% were seen at clinics rather than hospitals, Ministry of Health and Welfare data show. That count covers registered medical institutions only, so ask each clinic to show its registration to treat foreign patients. Then check each one on these five points:

  1. Surgeon: the contract names the operating surgeon, a plastic surgery specialist who focuses on eyelids.
  2. Quote: the quote is itemized in won and covers anesthesia, medication, stitch removal, follow-up visits and 10% VAT.
  3. Technique: the suture technique (continuous, two-point or transconjunctival) is named in writing.
  4. Aftercare: the re-suture and revision policy states its time limit and cost, and the clinic offers English aftercare with a plan for patients who live abroad.
  5. Results: before-and-after photos share the same lighting, and the clinic gives its own re-suture rate to set against the published 13.4%-26.2%.

Walk away from same-day surgery offered without measuring your eyelids. The same goes for discounts that expire unless you book on the spot, all-in packages with no breakdown and quotes that skip VAT.

What Should You Ask at a Double Eyelid Consultation in Korea?

Ask every clinic the same seven questions and compare the written answers:

  1. Do I have ptosis, and will you measure it?
  2. Which suture technique will you use on my eyelids?
  3. Will you remove fat, and what does that add to the price?
  4. On which day do the stitches come out, and when can I fly?
  5. What does a re-suture or revision cost, and for how long is it covered?
  6. Is the quote itemized in won, with 10% VAT stated?
  7. How many cases of this exact technique has the operating surgeon done?

Bottom Line: Suture or Incision for Double Eyelid Surgery in Korea?

For thin lids, a continuous buried suture on a 7-day trip is the best value at about ₩2,400,000 (US$1,611), including 6 hotel nights. Hooded or fatty lids justify an incision and a 10-day stay at about ₩3,650,000 (US$2,450). Skip the two-point suture: once a possible revision is counted, it saves only ₩110,300 (US$74). Before you book flights, shortlist two or three Seoul clinics and ask each for an itemized quote in won that states VAT. Get the stitch removal and flight dates in writing too. Then take one question into every consultation: which technique will you use on my eyelids, and what will a second operation cost if the crease loosens?
